Christchurch Girls ‘High School business studies students participate in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Program. The scheme requires that the students form small teams, form a company, develop a business plan then design make and sell a product.
Andrea James the Teacher in charge of the program comments “it’s a great chance for our students to learn about how businesses operate including structure, finances and operations. Each year we see some really great ideas. Each team is allocated a mentor and Dough Lab were linked up with John Morgan of FoodSouth.”
Laura Pinnell the leader of the Dough Lab team says “we’ve just completed our first manufacturing run of dough using the FoodSouth Pilot Plant. It was a great experience building our product from scratch and the FoodSouth people were very helpful.” Laura continues “Our Teacher, John and his team have helped us take it from an idea to a real product – it’s tasty, safe and profitable and customers like it.”
John comments “this is the second year I have mentored a team wanting to make a food product. Part of what the Food Innovation initiative is about is to build capability – that’s about helping and inspiring. These young women are capable and keen, some might go on to be become the next cohort of successful entrepreneurs that NZ needs.”
