Sanford Ltd is a long-established New Zealand company devoted to the farming, harvesting, processing, and marketing of quality seafood and aquaculture products.

However, as explained by Dr. Sabrina Tian, Innovation Research Science Manager at Sanford “Increasing emphasis is being placed on utilising Sanford’s natural resources for more than just raw material in the traditional sense. Our innovation department wanted to find uses for parts of the fish that are regarded as by-products and generally end up as fish meal. The FoodBowl was the perfect place to make prototypes, test concepts and help commercialise our ideas”.

Sanford carried out multiple projects at The FoodBowl over a four year period to produce a wide range of high value marine nutraceutical ingredient prototypes. This included fish oils, proteins and mussel extracts.

“Using the FoodBowl allowed us to experiment on different raw materials and processes to get results we needed.” Says Tian.

“The FoodBowl has a very extensive range of equipment, and their engineers could tailor the set up to suit our needs. We used decanters, polishers, heating vessels, separators and other machines. If there were any gaps, then The FoodBowl engineers made recommendations of equipment suppliers that could be approached. The FoodBowl really opened our minds to the possibilities”.

“Furthermore, because the FoodBowl has an export RMP, we were able to make samples of the new products to show our export clients”.
