Small-scale export processing & certification essential!

A focus on supply into the ingredient and food service sectors is the driving force of Progressive Processors Ltd, an established Bay of Plenty food processing company that processes and exports fruit and vegetable products. Neil Butler, from Progressive Processors, engaged with The FoodBowl to undertake trial processing of value added fruit products for development of potential new markets worldwide. “The project involves kiwifruit and other fruit products that are formulated and processed as high quality high fruit content shelf stable ingredients for marketing into food service sectors” explains Neil. “The FoodBowl has a wide range of equipment, food safety compliant facilities, technical staff and resources well suited to the development of value added food products for trial processing and test marketing. Progressive Processors were able to export these products direct from The FoodBowl to the potential markets in Asia for evaluation.” Because the samples were needed to be exported to Asia for evaluation, the facility at which they were made needed to have an export license, further, it needed to allow small scale prototyping as well, instead of the normal large scale production runs that usually go with export certified facilities. The FoodBowl is the perfect place to facilitate small scale prototyping for export, allowing Neil and his team to spend a few days testing the right method then producing an economic quantity of product perfect for sensory evaluation by the overseas customer. Progressive Processors is continuing in the development and trial processing, commercialy of value added fruit products. As these products gain market acceptance the processing will be developed further into increased sales and wider business opportunities. The first export order is underway and is progressing positively.
