THE FOODBOWL
Event Date: 15 Oct 2019
Supercritical fluid extraction is a technology that is well suited to preparation of a range of natural product ingredients and is seeing an increase in industrial utilisation in the food, health, and cosmetic sectors. It is a process that enables ‘solvent free’ separation of many oils, resins, flavour, fragrance, and pigments, without exposure to heat or oxygen during processing.
This workshop will provide an introduction to the use of supercritical fluid extraction technology, what applications it is suited to, and what to expect if investing in extraction equipment or supercritical fluid extracted ingredients. The presentations will include examples of successful New Zealand applications of the technology, as well as emerging and potential opportunities.
Callaghan Innovation has a pilot extraction plant installed at The Food Bowl to enable trial products to be developed and the workshop will include a brief tour of the pilot plant and The Food Bowl facilities.
Presenters:
Dr Owen Catchpole, Callaghan Innovation. Dr Catchpole is a pioneer of the supercritical fluid processing industry in New Zealand, and an internationally recognised expert in the field. He has more than 30 years of experience, spanning products from microalgae through to marine oils, and herbs and spice extracts.
Dr Stephen Tallon, Callaghan Innovation. Dr Tallon leads a team of process engineers at Callaghan’s pilot product development suite in Lower Hutt. The team has extensive experience in a wide range of industrial separation technologies, including operation of the southern hemisphere’s most comprehensive development and test facility for supercritical fluid processing.
Programme:
- Extraction fundamentals.
- Applied examples selected from Callaghan Innovation’s experience with dairy, wood, herbs and spices, algae lipids, and cannabis extraction.
- Commercial plant virtual walkthrough and NZ toll processing options.
- Manufacturing options. Scale up and development options, plant capital and operating costs, and NZ toll processing opportunities.
- Pilot plant showcase.
